DJ gear manufacturers have been introducing them in their cd players consisting of different types of functions. Technically, sampling is created by recording an excerpt of an analog sound at the input level of a sound source such as a cd player for example. Analog sounds are continuous waveforms with an infinite number of amplitude values in lenght. Before this passage of sound can be recorded into a digital form to be stored on the ram chip of a sampler it is handled by an analog-to-digital converter. To capture a sample from an analog sound it handles a set of mathematical operations at timed intervals to determine with optimal accuracy the measurements of the sound waves amplitude. The rate at which the number of samples are taken per second is refered to as the sampling rate. The typical standard is set at 44.1khz per second which is more than twice the audible human frequency. It is a criteria since the sampling frequency must be at least half of the analog frequency. Another specification attributed to the digital accuracy of the sound is called the sample size also refered to as the sample resolution which is the size of the file. The standard is 16 bit whick breaks the sound wave into 65,535 increments for greater detail. Finally, before you can trigger the sound it translates the sequence back to the digital-to-analog converter to it's original level. Also remember that the sampling rate and bit size of a sample is very important for the quality of the sample. If possible always use the highest values as it will closely represent the original analog sound however consuming higher memory. A trick that some use to reduce the amount of memory is to slice the sampling rate since the majority of individuals can't hear up to 20 khz. As a result, having alot of memory is suggested if you do not want to be limited to the quality and lenght of your samples. The sampling technique can also be used to preview the following track of a song for excitement or to cut unexpectedly a song to tease the audience and then fading back to the current track. Sampling is also great to be implemented to extend short instrumental introductions to some music to produce long overlapping energetic mixes. Thanks to sampling, the bass beats of tracks are set at constant intervals permitting DJ's to beat mix tracks with extreme accuracy.
